When it comes to happiness, stuff matters less than relationships and experiences. We know this, and yet…BLACK FRIDAY! CYBER MONDAY! (at least there’s Giving Tuesday to counter the gluttony).
Since we are all going to end up buying things this holiday season, why not buy things that make the world more beautiful? Things that #givework to the people who need it most? ICYMI, I gave a talk on this subject at TEDxAmsterdam a few weeks back — check it out here.
Here are my favorite places to shop ethically this season:
Raven + Lily: beloved fashion, accessories, and home goods made by women artisans and curated by founder Kirsten Dickerson in Texas. We’ve ordered gifts for clients and staff from R+L, and they’ll even customize items for bulk orders. My favorite items: chic pottery and mudcloth clutches.
The Little Market: pick up home decor, candles, and accessories made by women artisans around the world with a fair trade model. I love the curation on the site — beautiful imagery and well-designed items make it a joy to shop here. Best buy: handmade quilts from India.
Nomad Tribe: this South American fair trade fashion site combines bold colors and Latin designs for men and women. I found my favorite one-piece at their retail shop in Miami and they also sell beautiful brands like Veja sneakers.
Accompany: I love this site for their jewelry collection and seasonal colors, including fair-trade stockings!
So there you have it: four curated, chic marketplaces for all your shopping needs. If you’re going to buy things this holiday, vote with your dollars on items that make the world just a little bit better 😃
